On the Twin Paradox in a Universe with a Compact Dimension

چکیده
We consider the twin paradox of special relativity in a universe with a compact spatial dimension. Such topology allows two twin observers to remain inertial yet meet periodically. The paradox is resolved by considering the relationship of each twin to a preferred inertial reference frame which exists in such a universe because global Lorentz invariance is broken. The twins can perform “global” experiments to determine their velocities with respect to the preferred reference frame (by sending light signals around the cylinder, for instance). Here we discuss the possibility of doing so with local experiments. Since one spatial dimension is compact, the electrostatic field of a point charge deviates from 1/r. We show that although the functional form of the force law is the same for all inertial observers, as required by local Lorentz invariance, the deviation from 1/r is observer-dependent. In particular, the preferred observer measures the largest field strength for fixed distance from the charge.

Compact city dose it create an obligatory context for urban sustainability?
Throughout the early and mid 1990s, there was widespread faith in the compact city model's ability to provide urban sustainability. However, where compact city policies had been implemented, follow-up studies began to show the predicted benefits did not happen as they should be. The article tries to peruse two opposite approaches of "Urban Sprawl" and "Compact City", with an analytical - cri...
متن کاملTwin signed total Roman domatic numbers in digraphs
Let $D$ be a finite simple digraph with vertex set $V(D)$ and arcset $A(D)$. A twin signed total Roman dominating function (TSTRDF) on thedigraph $D$ is a function $f:V(D)rightarrow{-1,1,2}$ satisfyingthe conditions that (i) $sum_{xin N^-(v)}f(x)ge 1$ and$sum_{xin N^+(v)}f(x)ge 1$ for each $vin V(D)$, where $N^-(v)$(resp. $N^+(v)$) consists of all in-neighbors (resp.out-neighbors) of $v$, and (...
متن کاملA Novel Compact Dual Notch Band Filter Based on Metamaterial Concept
Using composite right-left handed (CRLH) transmission line concept, a novel miniaturized dual notch band filter (DNBF) is proposed. The suggested DNBF consists of an interdigital transmission line (ITL), split ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs). Since the resonance frequency of the SRRs and CSRRs are quite independent of each other, the dual notch bands of th...
متن کاملTheory of Relativity through the Doppler Effect
We present the special theory of relativity taking the Doppler effect as the starting point, and derive several of its main effects, such as time dilation, length contraction , addition of velocities, and the mass-energy relation, and assuming energy and momentum conservation, we discuss how to introduce the 4-momentum in a natural way. We also use the Doppler effect to explain the " twin parad...
متن کاملMiniaturized High-Pass Filter Based on Balanced Composite Right-Left Handed Transmission Line Using Meander Spiral Complementary Split Ring Resonators
In this paper, a compact high-pass filter (HPF) with a sharp rejection response based on the balanced composite right-left handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) concept is proposed. A series LC resonator using an interdigital capacitor and meander lines is designed. Also, a meander spiral complementary split ring resonator (MSCSRR) is used to realize the parallel LC resonator. The high-pass filt...
